Feeding Liverpool

The Queen of Greens – a greengrocer on wheels – fits into this by providing a mobile service, going into areas of the city where it is easier to buy a vape than an apple. This involves a lot of logistical work and organisation, so we are always thankful for the partners and funders who support our team. 

This year (2026), thanks to the generosity of the Waterloo Foundation, we have been able to recruit project manager Matthew Proud. We have begun expanding into static stalls in hospital receptions, enabling staff, patients and visitors to benefit from easier access to fresh fruit and vegetables. Later this year, we will be working with the SCHOUSE UKRI funded academic research project to take the Queen of Greens into areas where there is a density of social housing, but limited access to healthy food. 

Through support from Sustain UK’s Bridging the Gap pilot, we have been able to offer a selection of organic produce since autumn 2024; since we do not add a premium to these items, we are able to charge the same price as conventional produce, which makes it much more affordable to our customers. We intend to continue with this initiative, working with our existing supplier Organic North and Kindling Farm in Tarbock, who are growing agroecological produce including salads, courgettes, squashes, celery, apples and plums.

We are also pleased to have obtained Real Living Wage Employer status and have recently joined Better Food Traders. It is important to us that we ensure our staff and suppliers are paid fairly and on time, to support an alternative local food economy that is establishing itself here in the Liverpool City Region.
