Understanding Austerity: resources from Life on the Breadline

Austerity isn’t a term many of us use in everyday life, but austerity policies have significantly effected the lives of those experiencing poverty in the UK.

Three year research project Life on the Breadline based at the University of Coventry have produced an Austerity Timeline to visually explain austerity policies introduced between 2008 – 2021.

They have also created this short video, aimed particularly at Christian churches but applicable to all, to encourage communities to think about the unequal impact of austerity in the UK:

Challenges and Priorities (June 2020)

Challenges and Priorities (June 2020)

During June 2020 members organisations of Feeding Liverpool were asked to complete a snap-survey about the challenges they are facing, and their priorities for the months ahead.

29 representatives from 23 organisations responded to this survey. Respondents included organisations providing emergency food provision (e.g. foodbanks), affordable food initiatives (e.g. community markets, food pantries, and community shops), community-based organisations (e.g. community centres and youth organisations) and housing associations.

The four briefing notes below have been created to share their responses. Responses have been anonymised unless permission has been given for an organisation to be identifiable. We have tried to represent the views and voices of the respondents accurately – to ensure they are heard directly by decision makers – therefore the views presented here are not necessarily those of the Feeding Liverpool steering group. Where a view was offered by only one respondent this has been indicated in the briefing note. All other responses where articulated by more than one respondent.

  1. What are the challenges and concerns of those experiencing hunger and food insecurity in Liverpool?
  2. What are the challenges and concerns of organisations supporting those experiencing hunger and food insecurity in Liverpool?
  3. What are the short-term priorities (0-3 months) of organisations supporting those experiencing hunger and food insecurity in Liverpool?
  4. What are the long-term priorities (4+ months) of organisations supporting those experiencing hunger and food insecurity in Liverpool?

The full document containing all four briefing notes is also available here.
